For the first two hours of his sold-out MetLife Stadium concert Saturday night, Elton John regularly waxed rock luminary dropped tidbits and factoids, about how Aretha Franklin had covered 1970′s “Border Song” shortly after he released it, much to his delight, and how ‘73′s “Have Mercy on the Criminal” had been added to the rotation for the tour after years of not playing it. Story after story; yarns only one of the most successful singer-songwriters in recorded history could then, as Sir Elton broke into the first jaunty notes of 1983′s defiant “I’m Still Standing,” a more panoramic stroll down memory lane began on the Jumbotron: Classic performances, including his legendary Dodger Stadium concert. Music videos for songs like “Club at the End of the Street.” Movie and television clips, from “The Lion King” to “Soul Train.” Photos of him and his many iconic looks throughout the montage thrilled the crowd as John, now 75, sat at his baby grand piano, hammering the keys and wailing away in his bright, rhinestoned suit and tinted glasses. It was in this moment, before 60,000 glittered, feather-boa-ed and sweat-soaked fans, that the full weight of John’s ongoing “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” good-bye tour was felt, and the void that will be left in his absence after half of century of stellar show, plus a sequel gig Sunday night in East Rutherford, almost unthinkably comprises John’s final New Jersey shows (or so he says, this tour began in 2018 and has been extended already). So it’s been refreshing to see Elton John, going out with a bang; plenty in the tank even after more than 300 dates on this mammoth farewell years after vocal surgery saved his career, John’s voice was not quite as impressive Saturday as it was during his heyday. But by the time he strolled out for the encore and his set had stretched past the two-hour mark (in this third sparkling outfit of the night), one couldn’t help but be impressed by his stamina, nor the high-octane backing of his six-piece band. He crooned his way beautifully through “Rocket Man” early in the performance, and showed no signs of slowing down as he rocked out during the apt “The Bitch Is Back” later in the set. But any chagrin over lack of creativity, considering John’s massive songbook, was undone by the glee of the packed crowd, who danced and sang to every song. The “la-la-la”s bolstering “Crocodile Rock” could probably be heard all the way down Route 3 at the Tick Tock Diner.“I’ve had one hell of a ride, and you have been there,” John told the crowd during his encore. “You made it possible.”If this indeed the end of the yellow brick road, he’s stepping off the path with the same flourishes that made his decades-spanning career indelible.
